Frequently Asked Questions

Q1 What pressure do we set acetylene regulators to?

The recommended oxy/acetylene cutting tip pressures vary by size. To cut steel less than 1 ½" thick and without manufacturer settings, set the acetylene regulator to 10 psig and the oxygen regulator to 40 psig.

Q2 What is used to stabilize acetylene gas?

Acetone is added to acetylene cylinders to assist the gas stay stable. If an operator exceeds the recommended flow rate, the cylinder will remove both gas and acetone. Reduced acetone levels can make the cylinder unstable and unsafe.

Q3 What causes acetylene to explode?

If a cylinder containing pressurized acetylene gas is subjected to a flashback, begins to warm up or vibrate, or was involved in a fire, its contents may have began to degrade. This process can become self-sustaining, leading the cylinder to explode several hours after the first incident.
