It has a single port that is usually located at the bottom of the cylinder where the pressurized fluid is pumped in. As the fluid enters, it fills up the cylinder and extends the piston.

In order to retract the piston, the single acting hydraulic cylinder has to rely on an external force like gravity or a second piston that forcefully pushes it back into the cylinder. Springs can also be used if they are strong enough.
