Best Generators in Nigeria (2026): Top Picks, Sizes & Prices
The best generator for most Nigerian homes is a 5.5–6.5kVA petrol generator: it runs lights, fans, TV, a fridge or freezer and a pumping machine. For a small flat or shop, a 2.5–3kVA is enough. For large homes and offices with air conditioners, choose 9kVA or more. Honda generators last longest under daily use; Maxmech gives you more power for less money. Below are the Honda and Maxmech generators we supply, what each one can power, and how to choose the right size.

The best generators in Nigeria: our top picks
1. Maxmech RWD 6500E (6.3kVA): best value for family homes
The RWD 6500E is a 6.3kVA petrol generator with a key starter and copper winding. It covers a typical family home, including one heavy load such as a freezer or a 1HP pumping machine, at a much lower price than a Honda of similar size. It is our most popular Maxmech generator.
2. Honda EZ3000CX (2.5kVA): best small generator for daily use
The EZ3000CX uses Honda's GP200 petrol engine and produces 2.2kVA rated (2.5kVA maximum). It has an 11.5-litre tank and recoil start, and weighs about 44kg. Choose it for a flat, shop or office that runs a generator every day: lights, fans, TV, laptops and a small fridge.
3. Maxmech RWD 5200E (3kVA): best budget generator
A 3kVA petrol generator with a key starter, copper winding and 230V output. It is the lowest-cost generator we sell, and the one to choose if you mainly need lights, fans, a TV and a small fridge for a few hours a day.
4. Maxmech RFS 6500E (6.3kVA): same power, two ways to start
The RFS 6500E matches the RWD 6500E in output, with a copper alternator and both electric and recoil (pull) start, so you can still start it by hand if the battery is flat. Choose between the two by availability.
5. Honda EZ6500X (5.5kVA): best for homes with long power cuts
A 5.5kVA Honda petrol generator with recoil start and a compact frame. It costs more than a Maxmech of similar size, but a Honda engine usually lasts longer when the generator runs most of the day, every day.
6. Honda EM10000 (9kVA): best for large homes, offices and sites
The EM10000 produces 8kVA rated (9kVA maximum) with electric start. It can carry air conditioners, pumps and several heavy appliances together, making it the choice for large homes, offices, clinics and work sites. It is a heavy machine (about 150kg dry), so plan a permanent, ventilated spot for it.
What size generator do you need?
Add up the watts of everything you want to run at the same time, then convert to kVA:
Example: a fridge (300W), TV (150W), 3 fans (225W), 6 bulbs (300W) and a 1HP pumping machine (750W) total about 1,725W. 1,725 ÷ 800 = 2.2kVA, plus 25% = about 2.7kVA. But a pumping machine or fridge draws two to three times its power for a few seconds when it starts, so a 5.5–6.5kVA generator is the safe choice for this home.
| Generator size | What it usually runs together | Our options |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5–3kVA | Bulbs, fans, TV, decoder, laptops, small fridge | Honda EZ3000CX, Maxmech RWD 5200E |
| 5.5–6.5kVA | All of the above plus a freezer, pumping machine, washing machine or microwave (one heavy item at a time) | Maxmech RWD 6500E or RFS 6500E, Honda EZ6500X |
| 9kVA and above | Large homes and offices, including air conditioners and several heavy loads | Honda EM10000 |

Honda vs Maxmech: which brand should you buy?
| Honda | Maxmech | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Higher | Lower: more kVA for your money |
| Best for | Running most of the day, every day | Backup during power cuts |
| Engine | Genuine Honda engine, known for long life | Value petrol engine, copper winding |
| Sizes we supply | 2.5kVA, 5.5kVA, 9kVA | 3kVA, 6.3kVA |
If your area has long daily outages, a Honda usually costs less over its life because it lasts longer. For a few hours of backup, a Maxmech gives better value.
Petrol, diesel or gas?
- Petrol: lower price, lighter and quieter. Best for homes, shops and offices up to about 10kVA. All the generators above are petrol.
- Diesel: costs more to buy but uses less fuel per hour and suits very long running, estates and industrial sites.
- Gas: cleaner, but gas generators and refills are still less common in Nigeria.
Generator safety at home
- Never run a generator indoors, in a garage, on a balcony or near windows. Its fumes contain carbon monoxide, which kills without warning.
- Place it outside in an open, shaded spot, away from doors and windows.
- Use a proper changeover switch so power never flows back into the NEPA line.
- Switch off and let the engine cool before refuelling.
- Do not overload it. Switch heavy appliances on one at a time.
Maintenance tips to make your generator last
- Check the engine oil before every start, and change it as the manual says. See which engine oil is best for your generator.
- Use clean, fresh petrol, and drain the tank if the generator will sit unused for more than a month.
- Clean the air filter regularly, especially in dusty harmattan months.
- Check the spark plug and fuel filter, and tighten loose bolts.
- Seeing smoke? Read what causes generators to smoke.
